What’s on in Stroud this week: 8 – 14 September

It’s another busy weekend for events in Stroud and beyond as event organisers try to squeeze in as much as they possibly can between holiday season and the start of full autumn weather.

The result is that this weekend features more community events than you could possibly attend, as Horsley Fete goes head-to-head with Minchinhampton Country Fayre and Sheepscombe School Fete on Saturday, and a celebratory picnic in the Heavens competes for your attention with Berkeley Country Fair on Sunday.

Regular and one off events

Always a great day out, this year’s Horsley Fete promises live music, morris dancing, a dog show, vintage cars, children’ s inflatables, a barbecue, teas at the village hall and food and drink. Attendees can also expect a craft and produce show and tug of war, as well as farm animals and a raffle.

Minchinhampton’s biennial Country Fayre returns this Saturday thanks to the team at Minch Life. The Fayre kicks off just before noon with the ringing of the church bells and a vintage vehicle parade and children’s pageant through the town centre. After that, attendees can expect live music, a dog show, fun fair, climbing wall, mini golf, food and drink and plenty more.

Tiny Sheepscombe Primary School may boast less than a hundred pupils but the Friends of Sheepscombe School still know how to put on a good party. This Saturday, their annual fete promises a fun-packed afternoon featuring a sheep-based treasure hunt, a barbecue, tea and cakes, a duck race, face painting and more.

Taking place across 30 acres of formal parkland at the Frampton Court Estate in Frampton-on-Severn, Frampton Country Fair prides itself on being a traditional celebration of agricultural and country pursuits. The event boasts more than 400 trade stands, a traditional fun-fair, a range of livestock and three display rings.

Head up to the Heavens this Sunday for a celebration of the recent community buyout of the 102 acre green space, and the recent grant of more than £900,000 from the Summerfield Charitable Trust. Meet the team responsible for the project and enjoy a Sunday picnic with friends and family.

Fiddler Seth Bye and guitarist Chris Avery bring their reimagined traditional melodies to the Albert, featuring pizzicato grooves, intricate guitar tunes, and boundless improvisation. The gig follows their 870-mile tour on foot around the coast of Wales and their recent residency on Skomer Island off Pembrokeshire, where they led the Skomer Island Folk Week.

Beginning this week

Silversmith Callum Partridge showcases a selection of his work at SVA John St Gallery in connection with the Museum in the Park’s “Earth Fire Iron: Alan Evans and the New Iron Age” celebration. Partridge studied silversmithing jewellery and forged metalwork at London Metropolitan University, and is based in Stroud.

Further afield

The Gloucester History Festival kicked off last weekend, bringing over one hundred of Britain’s top historians, broadcasters, politicians and thinkers to Gloucester over 16 days. This weekend boasts talks from a range of speakers including Peter Frankopan, Vince Cable, Frank Skinner and Michael Heseltine.
