What’s on in Stroud this week: 17 – 23 November

Mid-November may seem like it should be a quiet time for events, but Stroud still comes up trumps with plenty to see and do.

This week’s highlights include the always-spectacular Festival of Wonder at St Laurence’s Church in central Stroud, and the annual Stroud Shindig celebration at the Sub Rooms. Plus music at Brimscombe Mill and the SVA, stand up at the Goods Shed and a record fair at Kingshill House in Dursley.

Regular and one off events

Brimscombe Mills’ Sanctum series lays on a night of sonic exploration with Welsh guitarist Gwenifer Raymond headlining with music from her latest release, ‘Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark’, described as “a hybrid of the ancient and the futuristic, where the arcane etchings of occult folk horror fuse with the unfathomable equations of the cosmos”. Supporting Raymond are Jacob Lovatt and Christopher Haddow, performing music from the seventeen-year back catalogue of their seminal Glasgow cult band, Jacob Yates and The Pearlygate Lockpickers.

St Laurence Church’s annual Festival of Wonder returns, featuring circus performances and a spectacular array of activities and offerings designed to engage, enrich and inspire wonder. The majority of events are free, including many on the festival’s community day on Sat 23 Nov, which includes two free performances of the main circus show and a number of other performances from local and visiting artists.

Stroud Jazz Club welcomes Cheltenham-based saxophonist, vocalist, composer and band leader Kim Cypher. Kim arrives at Stroud Jazz Club as part of her ongoing ‘LIVE and Smiling’ tour for a performance with the jazz club house band and to jam with fellow local musicians.

The Sub Rooms hosts the latest edition of their annual Stroud Shindig celebrations, this year featuring ten-piece collective TC & The Groove Family as headliners, with music fusing a range of genres including afrobeat, broken beat, jungle, and jazz. They will be supported by Stroud’s favourite skiffle-pop trio Thrill Collins and DJ Robbie Duncan.

The SVA Goods Shed hosts a special fundraiser for Medical Aid For Palestine.  The evening promises musical comedy, poetry, standup and conversation from a range of talented performers including Alexei Sayle, Clare Ferguson-Walker, Johnny Fluffypunk, Kate Smurthwaite and Mitch Benn.

Vinyl Daze Record Fairs return to Dursley’s Kingshill House, bringing together thousands of items to browse from sellers across South Wales, West Wales, Oxfordshire, Somerset and beyond. Expect a rich collection of CD and vinyl spanning genres from rock and metal to reggae, dance, hip hop, jazz, electronic and more.

Beginning this week
