What’s on in Stroud this week: 16 – 22 June

It’s the summer solstice this week, and Stroud’s events scene is in full bloom with the second weekend of Site Festival, Jonny Fluffypunk’s Penny Gaff at the Goods Shed on Thursday and an open farm day in Wick Street on Saturday.

Plus, for the solstice itself, join Cllr Gill Thomas on a fundraising overnight litter picking challenge along the Cotswold Way, beginning on Painswick Beacon at 9pm on Friday and arriving in Wotton-under-Edge for breakfast on Saturday morning.

Regular and one off events

Comedian, poet and podcaster Rob Auton brings his latest show to Stroud under the banner of Jonny Fluffypunk’s Penny Gaff. Auton was the winner of the 2013 award for Funniest Joke of the Edinburgh Fringe and we are told that this, his latest Edinburgh sell-out show, will feature laughter and poetry, beauty and warmth.

Minchinhampton Stroud District Councillor Gill Thomas leads a special overnight litter pick along the Cotswold Way to mark the summer solstice. The route sees participants start at 9pm on Painswick Beacon, arriving at Selsley Common in time for  sunrise and finishing with a team breakfast in Wotton-under-Edge around 10am.

Mel Skinner is the organiser of this weekend-long yoga retreat at Hawkwood to mark the summer solstice. The retreat promises deeply restful yoga practices and philosophy, as well as journaling techniques and nature-based meditations.

The Friends of The Croft School in Painswick hold their special summer celebration, with games, stalls, a bar and barbecue, face painting, a tombola and a raffle. If that wasn’t enough, we are told that there will also be tractors, inflatables and pizza.

Wick Street’s Good Small Farms invites everyone for a visit. Their free second open day will feature a range of activities, delicious food from the farm, tours of their market garden and a visit to the cows and chickens.

Berta, Kim, Misha and Ruth from Songs from the Porch bring their fiddle, double bass, accordion and rich vocal harmony home to the Prince Albert for one night only. This gig sees them perform alongside new choir, The Caw, a Stroud vocal supergroup featuring Melanie Golding, Asha McCarthy, Steve Hartley and Sophie Winter and members of Songs from the Porch.

Continuing this week

Site Festival continues for a second weekend, showcasing a range of creative talent up and down the Stroud Valleys. Alongside the continuing open studios, this week’s special events include a World Refugee Day evening at Hill House in Amberley on Fri 20 Jun and dance and movement collaborations at the SVA on Sun 22 Jun.

Further afield

Gloucester Guildhall hosts this immersive light and sound installation by Squidsoup & Vilk Collective, based around songs of welcome, belonging and overcoming adversity. We are told that the commission celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Moomins for Refugee Week.
