Shortwood 0 Redditch Borough 1 – UHL Hellenic League Div One
Shortwood’s search for a home win goes on after a narrow 1-0 defeat to high-flying Redditch Borough. An early penalty proved the difference in a scrappy contest that also saw Wood reduced to ten men, writes Jim Cunneen.
The decisive moment came inside the first minute when Warren-Paul was bundled over in the box. Edwards converted from the spot despite Joe Wright getting a hand to it. Wood thought they had a penalty of their own on 15 minutes when Muhid was tripped, but the referee waved play on.
Chances were at a premium, though Wright denied Carter twice — once with his feet and later at point-blank range — while Muhid’s 20-yard strike forced a save from Richards. At the other end, King flicked a header wide and Gardner missed a glorious chance from Tryner’s knockdown.
Any hopes of a comeback faded on 67 minutes when Dom Kent was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge. From then on, Wood battled hard but could not break down Redditch’s solid back line.
The absence of Alfie Bradshaw was keenly felt, and with confidence low, Wood’s home hoodoo shows no sign of lifting.
Shortwood: Wright, Williams, Price, King E, Tryner, Mulraney, Cronin, Kent, Muhid (Royer), Martin, Gardner.
