Stroud District Council has responded to an offer from Dale Vince to help fund repairs to Stroud’s outdoor swimming pool, saying it is currently unable to accept direct individual donations for the project.
The response comes amid growing concern over the future of the much-loved lido, which faces possible closure this summer following a February risk assessment that uncovered serious structural problems, including a cracked foundation and extensive corrosion within pipework and the pool tank.
In a statement issued to Stroud Times, a council spokesperson said: “We welcome the interest in supporting the future of the lido and appreciate any offers of goodwill. However, the council is not in a position to accept direct individual donations for this project.
“Any financial contributions would need to be made through an appropriate charitable vehicle, and at present no charity has come forward to take on that role.
“The estimated costs of essential repairs are still being compiled following independent technical assessments to address significant structural and operational requirements.
“At this time, the council has not received any formal approaches from individuals or organisations offering large-scale donations under an appropriate framework.”
Last week, Ecotricity founder and Forest Green Rovers owner Mr Vince told the BBC he would be prepared to contribute financially if additional support was required.
“If the council didn’t have all of that money, I’d be interested to help, but I haven’t been asked,” he said.
Mr Vince added: “The campaigners say it can be done for £100,000 in time for this summer, which I think is the most important thing.”
Campaigners have continued to call for urgent action to ensure the lido can reopen in time for the summer season.
