Dursley RFC benefit from sports fund backed by England legend

Budding Maro Itojes and Alex Matthews in rural communities around Dursley have been given a boost towards achieving their dream thanks to a new sports fund backed by former England cricketer Darren Gough.

The £100,000 Gigaclear Rural Sports Club Fund aims to support teams based in rural communities across the broadband company’s full fibre network, which spans 26 counties.

Sports equipment including tackle pads and tackle shields have been netted by Dursley RFC to help the young rugby players develop their gameplay and help them progress.

Club Social and Fundraising Manager Jake Martin said: “We’re delighted to have such fantastic support from the sports club fund. This equipment will help our mini and youth teams develop their skills and make for a more varied and exciting experience. The tackle pads, in particular, are a welcome addition as they will help us teach the correct techniques and keep everyone safe for years to come.”

Fund ambassador Darren Gough said: “Since launching the fund, it has gone from strength to strength, providing valuable support where it is needed most. It’s great to see so much kit and equipment being sent out to rural sports clubs such as Dursley Rugby Club. I believe it will help make a difference to players now and to the rural sports teams of the future.”

The club, whose teams play their matches at Hounds Green, in Dursley, is a significant contributor to the social and cultural life of Dursley, Cam and the surrounding Vale area.

They field three regular senior teams, have a continually growing women’s section, and have more than 400 boys and girls playing in mini and youth teams.
