One of Britain’s finest actors, Anton Lesser, will take to the stage at The Sub Rooms on Thursday, 17 July, as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Stroud Arts Festival.

Red Sky at Sunrise is an evocative celebration of the life and work of Laurie Lee, blending spoken word with live music to tell the story of the beloved Gloucestershire writer’s extraordinary journey from his childhood in the Slad Valley to his experiences during the Spanish Civil War.

The production explores both Lee’s warmth and humour and the darker chapters of his life, creating a powerful performance that carries striking resonance with today’s world as the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War approaches.

Lesser, who stars in Games of Thrones, is joined by Charlie Hamblett and the acclaimed Orchestra of the Swan, with a richly textured score featuring music by Britten, Holst, Elgar, Turina, Albéniz and Falla. The performance also features acclaimed Spanish guitarist Mark Ashford.

Promising an unforgettable evening of literature, music and storytelling, Red Sky at Sunrise is one of the standout events in this year’s Stroud Arts Festival programme.

The performance takes place at The Sub Rooms, Stroud, on Thursday, 17 July.
