A forgotten collection of Sir Winston Churchill commemorative gold coins, discovered hidden inside an old shirt box, has sold for more than £80,000 as Wotton Auction Rooms smashed its all-time sales record.
The remarkable find was one of several standout lots in the auction house’s Summer Fine Sale, which auctioneer Joseph Trinder has hailed as its “best ever sale”.
Speaking after the landmark auction, Mr Trinder said: “I’m hugely proud of our brilliant team at Wotton Auction Rooms. We recently had the pleasure of selling our 2026 Summer Fine Sale, which I’m delighted to say is the highest totalling auction in our over 100 years in business.”
He added: “It wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of the talented team I am proud to call my colleagues.”
The Churchill gold coin collection, discovered tucked away in an old shirt box in the wardrobe of the vendor’s late relative, sparked intense bidding before selling for more than £80,000.

The sale also produced a string of other eye-catching results across its 600 lots, which ranged from Roman antiquities to post-war and modern art.
Among the highlights was £64,000 for a 22-carat gold jug commissioned as a replica of an ancient vessel and intended for use as a wine jug.

A collection of treen, metalwares and decorative objects from the London and Sussex homes of Donald and Hilary Macpherson also proved highly sought after, with a group of Victorian and later sycamore breadboards selling for £5,000.
Elsewhere, a rare pearwood standing cup dating from the reign of King Charles I achieved £9,500.
Following the record-breaking auction, Wotton Auction Rooms is now inviting entries for its Autumn Fine Sale in September, alongside consignments for its monthly antiques and interiors sales. For more information, click HERE
