Dear Editor,
Spring will soon be here with all the beauty that it brings.
One thing I love to watch out for is the first orchids on the commons and another is the song of larks high up in the sky.
As a young child, in the late 50s, I used to walk from Box to the ice cream van with my sister, the sky was filled with skylarks then but over the years they have reduced in number by 66% and are now a red listed species.
With all this in mind there are actions we can take to help.
The breeding season is from the beginning of March to the end of July.
Everybody using the commons should stick to the designated footpaths during this period.
All dog walkers should have there dogs on a lead that is not too long – I have been told that this should happen by law anywhere during the nesting season.
I know dogs love to run off lead and there are plenty of local woods to facilitate that.
Could I just add that I am not against dogs on the common at all but I am for the protection of our wildlife on the common which help to make it such a special place for everybody to enjoy.
A Brinsford
