Performers from Stroud joined Line of Duty actor and singer Vicky McClure at St Paul’s Cathedral to raise money for a local charity and promote a planned event in the district this summer, writes Freddie Whittaker.
Former Archway School pupil Craig Mather was among those who joined McClure and the famous Our Dementia Choir to perform at a service of celebration organised by Gloucestershire-headquartered Benefact Group. Also in attendance was the family of Ros Tyler, the inspiring former Archway music teacher whose memory was honoured at a fundraising event last year and will live on at another special day organised by former pupils in August.

Last June, Stars: An evening inspired by Ros Tyler raised more than £12,000 for Longfield hospice in Minchinhampton.
On August 30th this year, the same group of ex-pupils will host Stars in the Park at Longfield’s headquarters. Tickets are available here: https://www.ticketsource.com/stroudstars. Mark Jefferies, another of Ros’s former pupils and Jane Dyer represented Longfield at the Benefact event.

Craig, who recently became a Longfield Ambassador, said: “Singing at St Paul’s Cathedral alongside Vicky McClure and the incredible members of our dementia choir was a genuinely unforgettable experience. The atmosphere in that building is unlike anywhere else, and hearing those voices fill such an iconic space was incredibly moving.
“What struck me most was the sense of community and the joy that music continues to bring to people living with dementia. Vicky’s passion and commitment to the choir is inspiring, and it was a privilege to be part of such a special event.

“It felt particularly meaningful because it reflected so much of what Ros stood for. She believed in bringing people together, creating opportunities for others, and using the arts to make a real difference in people’s lives. Seeing those connections being made through music in such a remarkable setting felt like a fitting tribute to her legacy, and a reminder of why events like Stars in the Park are so important.”

Ros’s husband Bob and sons Paul and Mark said: “We’re so proud of the legacy that she continues to build, sharing this truly inspiring experience with Craig and Longfield is something that will stay with us forever and really looking forward to another fantastic event in August.”
