What’s on in Stroud this week: 28 July – 3 August

The summer holidays are in full swing, with family events at the National Trust’s Tinkley Gate site and the Museum in the Park and special.

Plus Brimscombe Mill hosts a special young makers market, the Rodborough Tabernacle is running a nature day and the Ship Inn Community Space has revived the Stonehouse Regatta.

Meanwhile, for those looking for something more festive, Ruggers Green Barn in Nailsworth hosts a music festival in aid of Practical Intelligence, the Sub Rooms throws a beer festival with plenty of live music and the 50th Gloucestershire Vintage & Country Extravaganza kicks off over Cirencester way.

Regular and one off events

Artist and teacher Melissa Mayer invites those aged seven to 11 years to learn the art of linocutting in a fun session using recycled Tetra Pak cartons. The workshop takes place at National Trust’s Tinkley Gate site in Nympsfield, in collaboration with Stroud Valleys Project.

The Sub Rooms forecourt hosts a weekend-long Stroud Beer Festival in aid of the Sub Rooms itself, raising funds to help the team keep supporting music and the arts in Stroud. Expect beer, street food and music from Albino Tarantino, Dryadic, Sophie and The Sticks and more.

Brimscombe Mill shines a light on young creators, with special pop up stalls from artists and crafters aged 16 and under. The Long Table will also be open as usual for delicious coffee, cake and a tasty pay-as-you-can lunch.

Ruggers Green Barn on the hills outside Nailsworth hosts this special fundraiser in aid of Practical Intelligence, the non-profit that runs the Nailsworth Community Workshop and Pi Guitars. The event will feature bands across two stages, the smaller of which will be pedal-powered in the Stroud tradition and feature acoustic acts.

The Rodborough Tabernacle teams up with Remembering Rodborough, and the Stroud Valleys Project for a special event celebrating a natural world. Expect tours of the graveyard, face painting, stalls, poetry, refreshments and a raffle.

The team behind the Ship Inn Community Space in Stonehouse recreate a Victorian tradition started in the 1890s by former landlord Robert Larkin, who decided to bring the community together with a lively annual regatta. Stroud Valley Canoe Club revive the tradition with a special taster event for those aged seven and over.

Continuing this week

The Museum in the Park team continues its summer holiday programme this week by inviting families for this drop in session for budding archaeologists.  Dig up finds in the mini archaeological dig, make a paper skeleton or step back in time and create mosaic patterns inspired by the Romans.

Further afield

Stroud Vintage Transport & Engine Club hosts a 50th anniversary celebration of their annual extravaganza at South Cerney Airfield, near Cirencester. Expect steam engines, classic cars, trucks, historic buses, tractors, motorcycles, vintage caravans and more, including music, falconry and rural skills.

“The flag of St George should unite us, not divide us” – Stroud MP Dr Simon Opher

I have always been drawn to the flag of St George. Its bold simplicity — a blood-red cross on a white background — is instantly recognisable, and its history connects England to Milan, Georgia, Barcelona and Jerusalem.
