Storm Darragh has put a spanner in the works at social enterprise the Long Table, based at Brimscombe Mill, where Christmas meals were due to be dished up.
In a candle-lit video on social media, founder Tom Herbert revealed that a power outage has scuppered plans for ‘celebratory Christmas meals’.
“We had live music planned, a delicious menu, and not only is the power out and not likely to come back on until the middle of the night, but also some of the roof has blown off, and as hardy as we are, cooking over fires and things like that, we can’t do it safely for you – there’s no lighting outside and we don’t have any hot water.
“The coffee machine’s not working, the till is down – it’s really, really sad. You know us – if there’s any way to stay open we will.
“On Monday we’ll work out a plan for what we do next. There will be other evenings where we can welcome you back in. Hey, there are much worse things going on in the world, but it’s sad – life’s hard and we want to celebrate with you, and the fact some of you will come and share a meal with loved ones and teammates is part of what we do.
“The fact we can’t do that is really wretched, however, we will work out a plan and get back to you on Monday.”
