Shortwood 5 Newent 0 – UHL Hellenic League
By Jim Cunneen
Jake Rhodes smashed a second-half hat-trick as Shortwood moved into play-off contention.
Ian Soule’s side scored all their goals after the break, including three in five devastating moments for a shell-shocked Newent outfit.
Wood finally took the lead after 55 minutes. Rhodes put Chris Earle clear and seeing keeper Regan off his line he superbly sent the ball over him and in off the bar from fully 30 yards.
Wood continued to press and after 68 minutes scored an even better second goal. Odia Coly’s clever flick found Rhodes 25 yards out and his volley was unstoppable.
Wood then scored three goals in five minutes. Eakers’ free-kick saw Joe Tryner net their third on 75 minutes. Eakers turned provider again just two minutes later for Rhodes to bag his second. Rhodes bagged his hat-trick from the spot after Eakers had been fouled with 10 minutes to go.
